Research increasingly points to the importance of close social relations for resilience. People who report contentment with their partnerships and immediate networks of friends and family tend to score higher on wellbeing.

But how well are Europeans situated in their close social networks, especially in older age? How does it differ across Europe? Using data from the 2021-2022 Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE), Anna Rotkirch presents the implications for ageing societies.
