We cannot tell the future, as even our best demographic trend projections will be disrupted by unexpected events. But when research connects with policymakers, we can achieve realistic and probable scenarios, based on data and experience. These scenarios are the basis of any sound and science-based policy planning in the 21st century.

This week, our Policy Lab experts engage in Scenario Building. Our FutuRes foresight experts will be running three qualitative scenario building workshops.

“Scenarios for Resilient European Societies in Demographic Change”

FutuRes is an EU-funded project which connects leading researchers with policy and civil society. We use scenario building to find policy pathways for a crisis resilient Europe and to inform policymaking processes in the EU. The FutuRes research team has identified key influencing factors for resilience in Europe’s demographic development. These will constitute the basis for the joint development of the scenarios during the workshop. Based on the specific expertise of our participants we will lay out possible futures for resilient European societies in demographic change, with a focus on aging population.

The meetings are invitation only and will result in published scenarios later this fall.

Experts and stakeholders from academia, policy, and civil society across the EU, alongside high-level actors from international institutions, will participate in this collaborative scenario-building workshop.

What is Qualitative Scenario Building? Experts and stakeholders from policy, research, and civil society meet to collaboratively lay out possible future scenarios, based on the most likely demographic trends. When implemented correctly, this approach is recognised as helping to foresee future developments and to direct preparatory measures.
